EMCCMO - Music Rights Management in Ethiopia

Established on December 11, 2019, EMCCMO is Ethiopia's premier collective management organization for music. We represent composers, lyricists, singers, and producers, ensuring they receive fair compensation for their work. Acting as a bridge between music users and copyright holders, EMCCMO licenses music for broadcasts, public performances, streaming, downloads, and synchronization, collecting and distributing royalties to rightful owners.

Our centralized platform simplifies compliance with copyright laws, and we provide training and support services to help members protect their music. EMCCMO is dedicated to promoting the Ethiopian music industry and supporting the growth and success of its creators.

In addition to our core services, EMCCMO plays a crucial role in implementing Proclamation No. 872/2014, which amends the earlier Proclamation No. 410/2004. This amendment emphasizes the calculation and distribution of royalty payments, considering factors such as the nature of the work, its frequency of use, and the commercial value derived. The Ethiopian Intellectual Property Authority enforces these provisions, ensuring that rights holders receive equitable compensation for their works' commercial exploitation. This focus on royalty aims to foster creativity and innovation within Ethiopia's music industry.

Vission and Mission

Our mission is to be the leading Ethiopian society for music rights, committed to ethical and transparent management, and ensuring members receive maximum value through cost-effective services.

Our vision is to become the most trusted and efficient music rights organization globally, achieving recognition for Ethiopian music and ensuring artists are fairly compensated.

Protect and Monetize Your Music

EMCCMO ensures automatic copyright protection for your music as soon as it's created, without the need for formal registration. As a member, you earn loyalty payments (royalties) whenever your music is used commercially. To collect these royalties, simply join EMCCMO, register your songs, and upload your music through our system, guaranteeing you are compensated and your rights are protected.

Music Licensing

EMCCMO facilitates music licensing for businesses, ensuring fair compensation for composers, lyricists, singers, and producers.

By acquiring a license from EMCCMO, businesses receive legal authorization to play music in their establishments, protecting them from potential copyright violations and fines. This licensing process supports the music industry by guaranteeing equitable compensation for artists and creators.

Additionally, EMCCMO offers educational resources and assistance to members, helping them navigate the complexities of the music industry and safeguard their rights.

EMCCMO administers four primary types of music licenses to ensure fair compensation for copyright holders:

  • Performance in Public Places (PPP) License: Grants permission to publicly play copyrighted music in live venues, streaming services, and background music services.
  • Broadcasting License: Allows the transmission of music over radio or television waves, covering traditional broadcast channels.
  • Mechanical License: Permits the reproduction of copyrighted musical compositions in physical or digital formats, necessary for creating copies of songs on CDs, vinyl records, streaming services, and downloadable music.
  • Synchronization (Sync) License: Authorizes the use of copyrighted music in visual media, including movies, TV shows, advertisements, and video games.

Safeguarding Rights

EMCCMO is dedicated to upholding copyright regulations, securing royalties for artists, and brokering licensing agreements with entities that utilize music. By actively monitoring and responding to copyright infringement, EMCCMO safeguards the intellectual property rights of Ethiopian musicians, ensuring they receive equitable compensation and sustain their careers.

Ensuring Fair Compensation for Artists

EMCCMO empowers its members by collecting royalties whenever their music is used, providing a steady income for music copyright holders. This includes airplay on radio and television, streaming services, and public performances in places like hotels, clubs, bars, and restaurants.
